While repairing the roadway where the brook had washed it out in the July flood, we attempted to build some future flood resilience into the repair work. We pulled much of the dirt used to fill in the gully from an area near the culvert that we hope will serve as an alternate pathway for future flood waters. See the photo below. By the time the water level gets high enough to threaten to wash out the culvert again, some portion of the water should be diverted to flow through the alternative spillway.

The work looks beautiful! The bride and culvert are expertly prepared and the alternative spillway area seems prepared for extra water. It's handling the current influx of water very well without need of the extra space. Come see for yourselves! The water is just beginning to freeze into ice formations along the stream and it's going to be gorgeous winter walking.
